Harvard’s Institute of Politics, located at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, today announced the selection of an experienced group of individuals for Resident Fellowships this spring. Over the course of an academic semester, Resident Fellows interact with students, participate in the intellectual life of the Harvard community and lead weekly study groups on a range of topics.
“This Fellows class represents every kind of public service at every level in our world today. Our students are committed to exploring paths to public service, and our spring Resident Fellows will be important guides,” said Institute of Politics Director Bill Purcell.
The following Resident Fellows will join the Institute for the spring semester:
Mary Catherine (M.C.) Andrews, special assistant to President George W. Bush and director of the White House Office of Global Communications (2003-05)
Manny Diaz, Mayor, Miami, FL (2001-09) and former president, U.S. Conference of Mayors
Ernest Istook, U.S. Representative (R-OK; 1993-2007); distinguished fellow, The Heritage Foundation
Greg Nickels, Mayor, Seattle, WA (2002-09); author, U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement
Michèle Pierre-Louis, Prime Minister of Haiti (2008-09)
John Sweeney, president emeritus, AFL-CIO; president, AFL-CIO (1995-2009)
The Fellows program is central to the Institute’s dual commitment to encourage student interest in public life and to increase interaction between the academic and political communities.

Harvard University’s Institute of Politics (IOP), located at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, was established in 1966 as a memorial to President Kennedy. The IOP’s mission is to unite and engage students, particularly undergraduates, with academics, politicians, activists, and policymakers on a non-partisan basis and to stimulate and nurture their interest in public service and leadership. The Institute strives to promote greater understanding and cooperation between the academic world and the world of politics and public affairs.
