STATEMENT FROM ICPAD, THE FRANTZ FANON FOUNDATION AND PAPDA DENOUNCING THE STATEMENTS OF THE UNITED STATES PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE REGARDING HAITIANS
On September 10 (2024), U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump made slanderous and dangerous remarks about Haitians living in Springfield (Ohio) during his confrontation with Kamala Harris. Did he not already claim a few months ago that there would soon be no more Haiti and that someone would end up buying it ?
Beyond the undeniable stupidity of these remarks, they constitute an insulting lie and convey a diabolical message. This type of lie has been used by those who colonized Haiti and other territories, under the pretext that Indigenous people had no soul and that Africans were merely animals that ate each other.
For Africans and Afro-descendants, this anti-Black lie revives the specter of a primitive and violent racism, risking the empowerment of colonial racists to respond to the subliminal orders contained in such rhetoric, potentially leading to violent actions. It is essential for Afro-descendants to protect themselves and build a unified, clear, and supportive response, refusing to swell the ranks of a negrophobic far-right. As for white people, this shows—if it still needed to be proven—that racism against Black bodies remains prevalent, and despite all the mobilizations against racism, nothing substantial has been done to definitively eradicate it.
The International Coalition for People of African Descent and the Frantz Fanon Foundation call on all Afro-descendants and racialized communities not to vote for any candidate who defends Law and Order as a prelude to populism and the fascization of society. They also call upon African Americans engaged in acts of resistance against this virulent hatred to join us in solidarity. Additionally, they draw attention to those who prefer a false narrative, claiming that anti-Blackness is merely an issue of individuals rather than a systemic issue rooted in racism, capitalism, and liberalism. They are mistaken, and by remaining silent, they leave the victims to face such attacks alone.
The ideology of this candidate and his supporters is deadly, violent, and colonial. Unfortunately, this ideology is shared, with some variations, from the far-right to the left. The international community, as well as social movements and so-called civil society, must take responsibility and, in a combative decolonial spirit, block the path to these warmongers. As the international coalition and the Frantz Fanon Foundation have already done, they call on all Africans and Afro descendants to actively and politically support the Haitian people, who are fighting for their independence and existence in the face of the hegemonic desires of the United States and the Core Group. They urge all people to denounce, in a united and solidary voice, the statements of this candidate and to unite with the Haitian people to end the interference in their country.
Wherever we are, let us mobilize for Haiti and reject its re-occupation by the United States, the Core Group, the UN, and the Multinational Security Support force led by Kenya.
